Satellite Messaging and Advanced Apple Intelligence

iOS 18 introduces satellite messaging in the Messages app, allowing users to stay connected even without a cellular or Wi-Fi connection. This feature leverages the same technology as Apple’s existing satellite capabilities. Additionally, Apple Intelligence, a powerful new personal intelligence system, makes its debut. Integrated across iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, Apple Intelligence combines generative models with personal context to deliver incredibly useful and relevant insights. Built with privacy at its core, it harnesses the power of Apple silicon to simplify and speed up everyday tasks.

Home Screen Customization

iPhone users can now personalize their Home Screen like never before. You can arrange apps and widgets in any open space, even positioning them right above the dock for easy access. This new flexibility allows you to perfectly frame your wallpaper. Additionally, app icons and widgets can adopt a dark or tinted effect, and you can make them appear larger to create a truly customized experience.

Redesigned Control Center

The Control Center has been revamped for easier access to daily tasks and now offers unparalleled customization and flexibility. It provides quick access to your most-used controls, such as media playback, Home controls, and connectivity. You can easily swipe between different groups of controls and even add controls from supported third-party apps. Whether you need to unlock your vehicle or capture content for social media, you can do it all from one place. The new controls gallery displays all available options, allowing you to adjust their size and create entirely new groups.

Enhanced Lock Screen Controls

For the first time, users can customize the controls at the bottom of the Lock Screen. You can choose from various options in the controls gallery or remove them entirely. With the Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, you can quickly access controls available in the gallery, enhancing your Lock Screen experience.

Flexibility and Ease of Access

The new customization options in iOS 18 provide users with greater flexibility and ease of access. You can now tailor your iPhone to fit your unique needs and preferences, making daily tasks more convenient and efficient. Whether it’s arranging your Home Screen, customizing the Control Center, or personalizing the Lock Screen, iOS 18 offers a level of customization that truly enhances the user experience.

Unified Photo Library with New Collections

The Photos app undergoes its most significant redesign yet, making it easier than ever for users to find and relive their special moments. Now featuring a simplified, single view, the app displays your photos in a familiar grid format. New collections allow users to browse by themes without the need to manually organize content into albums. Additionally, collections can be pinned, ensuring that your favorite memories are always within reach.

Dynamic and Customizable Experience

The new carousel view in Photos presents daily highlights, showcasing your favorite people, pets, places, and more. Autoplaying content throughout the app brings your photo library to life, letting you enjoy past moments as you browse. The app’s customization options mean that each user can organize collections, pin frequently accessed collections, and select what appears in the carousel view, ensuring that the Photos app is tailored to what matters most to you.

Enhanced Messaging Features

iMessage in iOS 18 is packed with new features that make conversations more dynamic and expressive. With all-new text effects, users can bring any letter, word, phrase, or emoji to life with animated appearances. Formatting options like bold, underline, italics, and strikethrough allow users to better express their tone. Tapbacks have been expanded to include any emoji or sticker, and messages can now be composed and scheduled to send at a later time. Additionally, the Messages app now supports RCS, providing richer media and more reliable group messaging when communicating with contacts who do not have an Apple device.

Stay Connected Anywhere with Satellite Messaging

iOS 18 introduces Messages via satellite, ensuring users can stay connected even without cellular or Wi-Fi connections. Leveraging the same groundbreaking technology as existing iPhone satellite capabilities, this feature prompts users to connect to the nearest satellite directly from the Messages app. Users can send and receive texts, emojis, and Tapbacks over iMessage and SMS. With Dynamic Island, users are always aware of their satellite connection status. Importantly, iMessages sent via satellite are end-to-end encrypted, maintaining Apple’s commitment to user privacy.

Enhanced Inbox Management in Mail

Later this year, Mail will introduce innovative ways for users to manage their inbox and stay organized. On-device categorization will automatically sort incoming emails into categories such as Primary for personal and time-sensitive messages, Transactions for receipts and confirmations, Updates for news and social notifications, and Promotions for marketing emails and coupons. Additionally, Mail will feature a new digest view that compiles relevant emails from a single business, allowing users to quickly scan and find important information.

Major Updates to Safari

Safari, known as the world’s fastest browser, now offers an even more intuitive way to discover information on the web with Highlights and a redesigned Reader experience. Leveraging machine learning, Safari can highlight key information on a webpage, such as summarizing an article, pinpointing the location of a restaurant or hotel, or playing an artist’s track directly from an article. The Reader mode has been revamped to provide a distraction-free reading experience, complete with summaries and tables of contents for longer articles.

Introducing the Passwords App

Building on the legacy of Keychain, the new Passwords app provides users with easy access to their passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes. The app also alerts users to common weaknesses, such as easily guessed passwords, reused passwords, and those found in known data breaches, enhancing overall security.

New Privacy Features to Empower Users

iOS 18 introduces new privacy tools that give users more control over their data. Users can now manage who can see their apps, control how contacts are shared, and manage iPhone connections to accessories. Locked and hidden apps ensure that sensitive information remains private, with options to lock an app or move it to a hidden folder. When an app is locked or hidden, its content is concealed from search results, notifications, and other system-wide access points. Additionally, users can choose to share only specific contacts with an app, and developers can now connect third-party accessories without accessing the entire network, maintaining user privacy while enabling seamless pairing.

Apple Intelligence Revolutionizes the iPhone Experience

Deeply woven into iOS 18 and designed with privacy at its core, Apple Intelligence introduces powerful new tools to enhance user writing and communication. The new systemwide Writing Tools allow users to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text seamlessly across Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.

Fun and Creative Communication Enhancements

iOS 18 brings new image capabilities that make communication and self-expression more enjoyable. The Image Playground feature enables users to create playful images in seconds, offering styles such as Animation, Illustration, and Sketch. This tool is integrated into apps like Messages and is also available as a standalone app. In the Photos app, the Memories feature lets users craft stories by simply typing a description. Apple Intelligence selects the best photos and videos, creates a storyline with chapters, and arranges them into a movie. Additionally, a new Clean Up tool removes distracting objects from photos without altering the main subject.

Advanced AI with Unmatched Privacy

Apple Intelligence also significantly enhances Siri, making it more natural, contextually relevant, and personal. Users can now type to Siri and switch between text and voice as needed. With the introduction of Private Cloud Compute, Apple sets a new standard for AI privacy. This technology allows computational tasks to flex between on-device processing and larger, server-based models running on Apple silicon servers, ensuring that data is not stored or accessed by Apple. Additionally, integration with ChatGPT provides users access to its expertise and capabilities across Siri and systemwide Writing Tools, streamlining the user experience without the need to switch between different tools.
